Introduction: | A short trip to Hamburg, basically "normal" vacation - but also with a day of railfanning in Hamburg-Harburg, Hamburg Süderelbe, Buchholz and Sprötze. Railfanning was a little limited because of the low light in the month of November - it got dark at about 16. The weather generally was cloudy and a little misty - it may not sound like the best weather for pictures, but actually it is not so bad - and better than bright sunlight causing high contrasts. For a more detailed description of this rail hot spot, watch my German Rail Hot Spot page. |

November 19, 2010 | I started my day of railfanning by taking a Metronom regional train to Buchholz and from here to Sprötze - the next station towards Bremen. I had not been in Sprötze before, it was one of the new places, I had decided to explore and I found it to be pretty good, especially for southbound trains.
After about 1 hour of railfanning in Sprötze I took a train back to Buchholz - I had been here in September 2010, but I still had some photo opportunities to test. 2 hours later, the cold November weather had made me pretty cold, so I took a train back to Hamburg-Harburg which has become one of my favorite rail hot spots. Hamburg-Harburg was - as always - busy. And you can be pretty certain that after a while something unusual will show up. Also this time - from the south came Heavy Haul Power International 59 003 - the only class 59 on the continent, the rest operates in UK. My initial plan was to explore the railway bridges at Hamburg Süderelbe, but with the intense traffic in Hamburg-Harburg, I stayed there for a little while, until I took a bus to Hamburg Süderelbe (I find the Hamburg-Harburg busterminal and the busses in the Harburg area a bit confusing, so it took a little time to figure out). In September 2010 I visited the south side of Hamburg Süderelbe, this time my plan was to explore the north side. But I didn't find the north side as good as the south side - so after a long walk I was back at the south side and spend a little time there. It was just before sunset, and as the light slowly faded, I turned up the ISO-sensitivity - the pictures of course had some "noise", but still useful. At around 16 o'clock I took a bus back to Hamburg-Harburg, and after a few high-ISO shots (with limited succes) I took back to Hamburg. There still was a little railfanning to do at Hamburg Hbf where I photographed IC 1806, a special train to celebrate 175 years of railways in Germany, and headed by a class 103 and composed of "old" TEE and Rheingold-cars. |

November 20, 2010 | Not so much railfanning, most of the day was spend doing tourist-stuff. But I did spend a little hour in Hamburg-Harburg exploring possible new locations. | |
November 21, 2010 | Just before we went back to Denmark - by train - the counterpart of IC 1806, IC 1817, was in Hamburg Hbf, it was just in time to get some more pictures of this beautiful train. |
