UTAH / MONUMENT VALLEY |

On the border between Arizona and Utah lays Monument Valley. It's one of the most beautiful and different landscapes, I have seen. A lot of westerns and other movies are shot here.
The geologic story of the very characteristic mesa's is deposits of very thick layers of sediments about 40-50,000,000 years ago. Since then a lot of the sediments have eroded. Because the top layer is more resistant than the layers below, mesa's with vertical sides stand back. |
Besides the beautiful nature with very clear, red colors it is remarkable how few people that live here. It is the land of the Navajo Indians. They have some kind of self-government and it is not permitted for non-Navajo's to buy a house in the area. |
