FostoriaFostoria attracts railfans because of a very high train frequency. In Fostoria 3 lines cross, making it one of the most densely trafficated spots in the US. The 3 lines are 1) CSX Willard Sub (east-west), part of the mainline between Chicago and the east coast, 2) CSX Columbus Sub (north-south), and 3) NS Fostoria District (northeast-southwest).There are some general traffic patterns: CSX Willard Sub sees a lot of stack and intermodal traffic, CSX Columbus Sub sees a lot of coal from Kentucky and West Virginia and autoracks to and from the automobile industri in Michigan. The diamonds on the two CSX lines has connectors, and many of the trains changes direction in Fostoria. The traffic is very intense, and often you can hear the horns from 3 different trains on their way into Fostoria. | |||

Deshler Railfan Park (126 kb) |
In the small town of Deshler in northern Ohio 2 CSX lines cross. It's CSX ex-B&O mainline to Chicago (east-west) and CSX's ex-B&O Toledo Sub (north-south). At the junction between the two lines is a railfan park named Crossroads Park. Here railfans meet and enjoy the passing trains - and especially the mainline to Chicago offers an almost constant parade of trains. There is a covered pavillion with tables, a scanner, grill and a vending machine.
Regarding taking pictures the telephone poles makes it difficult to get good pictures without trespassing. |
