BNSF IN MONTANA

Home > Trains > USA > BNSF in Montana
The old Great Northern Railroad runs through northern Montana - the line is now part of BNSF. It's one of the mainlines between the Midwest and the Pacific. Even though the line is basicly single line, there is quite a lot of traffic.

Shelby

We stayed in Shelby for the night, next to the BNSF mainline. The next morning we did a bit of railfanning. The weather was cold, but the sky was blue.
Just opposite our motel 3 locomotives were standing the next morning, BNSF 725 (GE C44-9W) + BNSF 769 (GE C44-9W) + BNSF 6788 (EMD SD40-2, ex-BN 6788). We actually saw BNSF 769 about 48 hours earlier, near Sprague in Washington, as helper on a grain train. So this locomotive probably made the trip Sprague - Portland - Shelby, about 1100 mi, in less than 48 hours. March 25, 2005.
